New 2010 Colorado Licensure for Private Pay Home Care Agencies

  • Under the direction of the Colorado Department of Health, private pay agencies must obtain licensure as either
  • Non-medical – License “B”
  • Non-medical and Skilled – License “A”

Requirements licensed class A providers must adhere to (Chapter 26)

  • Care must be under the supervision of PHYSICAN or REGISTERED NURSE (R.N.)
  • On-going training shall be supplied to all direct care staff
  • R.N. shall conduct an assessment of medical, nursing, and social needs
  • A comprehensive care plan, when indicated, will be written, monitored, and changed as needed
  • Comprehensive assessment shall include a review of all medications
  • All comprehensive care plans will be reviewed and signed by an attending physician

  • Better agency communication with primary physician and other agencies
  • Ability to provide variety of care without changing home care providers as medical needs increase or change

ONLY licensed Class A home care givers can assist with the following:

  • Medication administration
  • Prescription eye medicine administration
  • Assistance for clients
    • with high risk choking and difficulty swallowing conditions
    • with peripheral circulatory problems
    • with open skin sores
  • Bathing with prescription skin care
  • Wound care
  • Respiratory care
  • Body positioning
  • Catheter insertion & removal
  • Digital stimulation, insert suppositories, enemas
  • Transfers and assist where client cannot direct the assist
  • Blood sugar testing
  • Blood draws
  • Injections
  • Tube feeding
